They receive training and support from experienced online teachers and ongoing technical support from COOLSchool staff. See Oregon Revised Statute 342.985 for qualifications to teach a distance learning course. Who pays for COOLSchool courses? Schools or districts electing to pay for designated COOLSchool courses must pay via purchase order. (Important note: after paying for a COOLSchool course, the district can claim the student in its ADM.) If the school or district does not cover the cost of a given course, that cost is borne by the parent or guardian of the registering student. Payment by private parties can be made by credit card, check, or money order, and must be received within seven days of the registration date. What does a single COOLSchool course cost? Payment for one regular education interactive course (0.5 credits) for one student for one semester is $295 for Oregon students and $345 for out-of-state and out-of-country students. Who
can register for COOLSchool courses? When can students register for courses? COOLschool has two registration windows for Regular Education courses and two registration windows for credit recovery courses. For registration dates, see How to Register. What is COOLSchool's calendar? A student has five months* from his or her Start Date
to complete a course. However, the student's resident school or district
may require a shorter completion period. Does COOLSchool offer summer classes? COOLSchool sometimes offers special shortened summer sessions. However, even when no special summer session is offered, students can take courses over the summer simply by registering before the end of winter registration (on or about June 15 each year). Our normal calendar applies - students have 5 months to complete their courses - but the student's resident school or district may require a shorter completion period. How do students register for courses? Students can browse through courses online or in the print catalog. All COOLSchool registration is conducted online. Students should check with their school or district to determine if the school or district will pay for a given COOLSchool course. If so, they will need that information (e.g., purchase order and billing address) when they register. How does COOLSchool determine credit? Upon successful completion of a Regular Education course, students are awarded 0.5 credits. Each course includes 90 hours of instruction and typically takes a student one traditional semester to complete. Upon successful completion of a Credit Recovery course, students are awarded 0.5 credits. Each course includes 50 hours of instruction and must be completed in the 5-month Credit Recovery session. This credit is more based on proficiency than seat time. (Oregon Administrative Rule 581-022-1131) The official COOLSchool transcript will document credit in Carnegie* units. However, school districts use various hour-to-credit calculations. Please check with your school counselor to confirm how hours of instruction translate into credits at your school. Your school will be responsible for translating your Carnegie units into the appropriate credit allocation for your district. * Carnegie unitOne Carnegie unit is equal to a conventional 50-minute class taken five times per week throughout the school year (~ 180 hours). A one-semester course is worth one-half of a Carnegie unit (~ 90 hours). Do all schools accept COOLSchool credit? COOLSchool is accredited by the National Association of Accredited Schools. However, each individual school district has the right to select the credit they will accept. Prior to course registration, students should check with their school regarding acceptance of credit and whether the course that interests them will meet their school's graduation requirements. Schools wishing to make a credit analysis on a given course will find the information they need on that course's Web site. Does COOLSchool grant diplomas? While there is no limit to the overall number of COOLSchool courses a student can take, COOLSchool does not offer at this time a comprehensive curriculum that allows us to grant a diploma How many COOLSchool courses can one student take per semester? The maximum number of courses one student can take in one semester is five, but students without online course experience are strongly encouraged to sign up for only one course during their first semester. How do students withdraw from a COOLSchool course? Students can withdraw from a COOLSchool course by contacting registrar@coolschool.k12.or.us. For specific information about withdrawing a student and tuition refunds, see COOLSchool's Drop/Withdrawal Policy. Is a supporting adult required? Yes. There is a critical correlation between online academic success and the availability of face-to-face support from an adult. COOLSchool requires that each student registering for a course identify an adult mentor at his or her physical location to serve as a resource. The adult contact is the liaison between the student and COOLSchool and, as such, will receive copies of the student's progress reports. Is COOLSchool attendance tracked? Yes. COOLSchool requires regular contact from its students. This ensures a meaningful curriculum for the student and protects schools whose COOLSchool students are ADM-funded. COOLSchool will notify the student's resident school if the student fails to "attend" COOLSchool (that is, does not keep in proper contact with his or her COOLSchool teacher). See the COOLSchool Attendance Policy for more detailed information. What is COOLSchool's grading policy? See COOLSchool's Grading Policy. Does COOLSchool comply with the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)? Yes. See Modified Grading and Report Cards for students with disabilities (Oregon Department of Education). How does a student get their final grade, transcript, and credit? Once a student has completed COOLSchool coursework, the teacher will submit a final grade to the COOLSchool registrar and a copy is then sent to the student's adult/school contact. Transcripts are mailed to the student's Transcript Mailing Address. Do students evaluate their COOLSchool experience? Yes. Upon completion or withdrawal from a course, a survey is e-mailed to the student from the COOLSchool registrar. What is COOLSchool's privacy policy? COOLSchool respects the right to privacy and has established policies that comply fully with COPA and CIPA. See COOLSchool's Privacy Policy.
