Grading Criteria - Calculus I: Differential CalculusThe grade earned for Calculus I: Differential Calculus will be based on your performance on tests and homework assignments. In addition, you will need to participate in threaded online classroom discussions. Materials will be evaluated as follows:
All homework submitted for grading will be assessed and feedback provided online. Unit tests will be provided via surface mail, and will be assessed and returned via surface mail. These unit tests will provide problems similar to those provided on the AP Calculus examination, and will require that you are able to not only select correct responses, but also demonstrate your mastery of the material through a logical and appropriate written explanation of your answers to free-response questions. These free-response items will be assessed using a scoring guide appropriate to Calculus content, and this guide will be provided to you early on in the course. We'll be referring to it as we procede throughout the term, and it should not be any major barrier or surprise when you see the tests. Sample test items and scoring guides used for previously administered advanced placement tests can be viewed at the College Board's AP Calculus Web site. You will have one opportunity to improve your score on the unit test, should your score not be indicative of your abilities. For those from Oregon, this course meets Levels A, B, E, and F Mathematics Content and Performance Standards (PDF) for the Proficiency-based Admission Standards System (PASS) for Oregon University System Admissions. PASS transcripts can be made available to you, and I am currently certified by OUS to evaluate portfolios and assess student collections of evidence. Therefore, those of you in the state of Oregon who are taking this course are highly advised to maintain a calculus portfolio of your work.
