About Course

In order to register for ASL 1.2, you should have taken ASL 1.1 through this provider. If you took ASL from another provider, please submit a performance piece prior to registering which demonstrates the following vocabulary and concepts:

  • The alphabet
  • Counting from 1-30
  • Pronouns: me, you, he, she, it, they
  • Possessives: mine, yours, his, hers, theirs
  • Family signs: mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, husband, wife, nephew, niece, divorce, family, children, single
  • School signs: teacher, student, principal, study, graduate, English, science, math, office, hall, library, test, freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, football, baseball, wrestling, volleyball
  • Time signs: morning, afternoon, night, day, hour, minute, Monday-Sunday, week, month, year, clock, future, past, recent, all day, all night, tomorrow, yesterday
  • Food signs: banana, hamburger, sandwich, fruit, vegetable, onion, soda pop, salad, ketchup, cheese, chocolate, egg, breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Demonstrate how to refer to someone who isn’t present.
  • Explain the difference between ASL and Signed English
  • Demonstrate how to ask a yes/no question and a wh-question (who/what/where/why/when)
  • Demonstrate how to indicate “and” without a sign for “and”
  • Demonstrate how to indicate “or” without a sign for “or”

Your instructor will review your performance piece, and if you have an adequate grasp of most of the vocabulary and concepts listed above, you’ll be invited to register for ASL 1.2. If not, you’ll be invited to register for ASL 1.1.
