The Principles of Design
or the Formal Properties

The Principles of Design, or the Formal Properties, are the ways artists combine the elements of design to create an artwork. These Principles are a way of controlling or creating order using the elements. A skillful blend of art elements and principles results in a successful artwork. The Principles of Design are also referred to as the Formal Properties.

The Principles of Design are Unity, Balance, Dominance, Repetition, Rhythm, Contrast, and Theme/Variation.

Unity is created when objects seem to belong to each other so that each contributes something to the whole composition. Nothing can be left out without changing the composition.

Take something out of the image at the right, does it change the quality of the total composition?
UNITY - Answer: The composition WILL change its quality.
Balance is created when there is an equilibrium of elements that need each other and together they create Unity.

Symmetry is created when the balancing elements seem to carry the same visual weight or shape on each side of the composition. Asymmetry is unlike sides.

Split the image above in half vertically. Can you find symmetry and asymmetry?
Architectural BALANCE - Split this in half from the center doors ... Can you find Symmetry and Asymmetry?
Dominance is created when one part is given more importance than any other part of the work.

What is the dominant part in this relief?
Answer: The relief sculpture shows DOMINANCE in center figure
Repetition is created when one of the Elements of Design is repeated at regular intervals. Rhythm is created when there is a regular repetition of particular forms; it shows a pattern of movement.

Can you find patterns that repeat?
A PATTERN is made when REPETITION is used - Can you find two that match? Three??
Rhythm is the regular repetition of a particular element(s). It suggests a motion by patterns of recurrent elements.

What line-describing words can you think of to describe the  rhythm in this image?

(Check the Elements of Design: Line section)
RHYTHM - Answer: graceful, smooth, dancing ... Did you think of others?
Contrast is created when opposites are used in close proximity such as light and dark colors, or large and small shapes.

What does this composition remind you of?
Black and White shows a CONTRAST of color - What does this composition remind you of?
Theme/Variation is the dominant feature that is repeated to give the work its character.

Can you guess what shape or feature gives this image its theme and character?
The circle of unity is repeated to give - Can you find 10 circular shapes. Why were circles used in the theme?
...off to Technical Properties
