Would you like to make classes like history, science, and government easier? Then English on the Web: Reading, Writing, and Speaking to the Standards is the course for you.

English on the Web: Reading, Writing, and Speaking to the Standards offers high school students mini courses in basic reading, writing, and speaking skills. As an added bonus, English on the Web modules provide Oregon students the opportunity to complete projects for state required work samples.

The modules are:

Module One
Reading for Understanding
:
Students will learn basic strategies for reading different types of literature. They will learn the differences between expository writing and narrative writing and skills for reading and analyzing each type. They will also learn skills to help them understand unfamiliar vocabulary words.

Module Two
Reading Literature
:
Students will learn skills to help them take an active part in reading. They will learn how to keep a response journal to aid in understanding. They will also learn how to understand and analyze parts of literature, and how to recognize and evaluate influences that may have inspired or affected a piece of literature. Students will end this unit by writing a literary essay in which they analyze a specific piece of literature.

Module Three
Writing in the Modes
:
Students will learn basic writing skills and how to use the Oregon State Writing Scoring Guide to evaluate writing. They will apply the writing process as they compose three essays. In the first essay, they will introduce themselves as writers; in the second and third essays, they will write in the expository and persuasive modes, respectively.

Module Four
Writing Research
:
Students will learn the proper steps to writing a research paper. They will work through all the parts of writing a research paper, from forming an idea, to taking notes, to creating a final, cited paper.

Module Five
Speaking for Assessment
