English on the Web COOLSchool

Procedures

Welcome to English on the Web: Reading, Writing and Speaking to the Standards. If this is your first online class, you are in for a great learning adventure, and the tips outlined below will help make this class easier for you. If you're an old pro at taking online courses, the tips listed below will help you understand how this particular course works.

Like all COOLSchool courses, English on the Web is asynchronous. That simply means that it does not take place at a specific time. Registration is open, so students can begin at any time. Everyone will not be working on the same thing at the same time. Some students will be ahead of you; others will be behind you. Some assignments ask you to respond or work with other students. That's OK. You can work with people who came before, people who are working at the same place you are, and even by yourself.

After you have looked over this course and have decided to take it, you should register. Shortly after you have registered, you should receive an e-mail confirming your registration. If you do not get a confirmation e-mail, please contact me.

Once I know that you have registered, I'll send you an e-mail welcoming you to the class and letting you know any last minute bits of information that you might need.

This course is divided into modules. Begin with Module 1, Lesson One. Most lessons follow the same basic format. You will read some material about a particular learning strategy, read additional material from the Internet, and complete various assignments. These assignments will ask you to demonstrate the strategies that you have read about. Sometimes you will be asked to answer questions; sometimes you will be asked to write papers; sometimes you will be asked to write a response about what you have read. Some of these assignments will be sent directly to me via e-mail; others will be posted to a Discussion Board area for other class members to read.

You will get the most out of this class if you interact with the other students in the course. Please use e-mail or the Discussion Board area for this interaction.

Do the lessons one after another in the order they are presented to you. You can work at your own pace, so take your time and do your best work. Just remember that you must complete the course within five months (or the time period decided upon by your school).

Good luck. I look forward to working with you.
