Advanced Placement English is a college preparatory course designed
to give you an opportunity to read and analyze some of the best literature
of all times. The purpose of Advanced Placement English is to improve
your writing and analysis skills through meaningful readings and activities
so that you will enter college with confidence and an excellent knowledge
base. This class will also prepare you to successfully complete the
Advanced Placement Literature and Composition examination given by The
College Board each spring. A high score on this exam will enable you
to receive college credit at most colleges and universities. The teacher of this class has chosen the literature listed in the course outline because of its popularity and influence on later works. These writings reveal the essence of human nature: from ecstatic joy to debilitating grief, from romantic love to revengeful hatred, from sweet innocence to repulsive depravity. They were also chosen because they are excellent examples of the attitudes of the people during the times in which they were written. Any piece of literature can be analyzed; the teacher feels it is best for your educational experience to use the works recognized as being the most significant of the Western world. As we study these great poems, stories, and novels, we will peek into the lives of the authors and the people with whom they interacted. We will contemplate their art, philosophies, religions, and pastimes. We will discover the authors' impetus and their undoing. In other words, we will look at the literature in the context of the world in which it was written. The process of analyzing literary works will be taught by teacher explication of pieces of literature followed by student analysis papers. As the course advances, the teacher will elucidate less and the students will scrutinize more, showing their progress through expository essays and research papers. This ability to read critically and write analytically will give the students an edge in any college class they pursue hereafter. |
