Activity 1: Web Pages that Suck Evaluation

Web pages and blogs have the potential to be a lot of fun....but you also need to remember the safety issues from lesson 5. If what I am talking about is kind of blurry feel free to peruse that section again.

If you are super interested in creating Web pages, there is a must-read book out there. Web Pages That Suck: Learn Good Design by Looking at Bad Design by Vincent Flanders and Michael Willis is wonderful. It is hard to tell someone that they have bad breath or that their Web page sucks, but Flanders & Willis do it with a good sense of humor and practical suggestions for making your pages better. The Web Pages That Suck site is definitely worth looking at. They have a great top-10 list of the worst offenders. They also have a check sheet to see if YOUR Web page sucks.

ASSIGNMENT DIRECTIONS: I am going to be brave here and ask you to check THIS course's Web site. Name four offenses (from the check list) and suggestions for improvement. (I'll try not to cry).

Activity 2: Creating a Web Page

ASSIGNMENT DIRECTIONS:

1. You should already have a Yahoo account. On the left-hand side there is a link under Featured Services for a Personal Website. Click on this.

2. There is a FREE option (Geocities Free). Click Sign Up Now.

3. You should be greeted with a page that looks similar to the panel to the left. http://geocities.yahoo.com/gcp/

4. Ignore both the Tour and Learn About the Control Panel. We will be playing with the other three links. Go to Create A Website first.

5. Choose PageBuilder, then choose a template. (You can delete or add anything to this template).

6. After you've chosen a template, start playing around with the features. LOOK AT THE CRITERIA FOR THE LESSON to make sure you have everything covered.

L14A2 - Grading Criteria

7. When uploading pictures..be patient, it may take a few moments for the picture to be listed.

Notice: Keep in mind that you ONLY have 15 MB worth of space with this site...pictures can easily fill up all that space. Try to keep your pictures no bigger then 400 pixels wide AND less then 500 kbs. (Right click on your picture to see what the properties are for this information). Crop creatively and make sure that you "resample" instead of squish your pictures. Resampling keeps the picture in proportion. I like to use Paint Shop Pro (free download from Corel that we used last lesson).

GRADING CRITERIA:

1. At least 3 pictures. At least one should be uploaded by you, not just clip art) (Insert, Picture)

2. SAFE text about you. At least three paragraphs' worth. (Insert, Text)

3. Insert at least one "page effect" (Insert, Page Effect, choose...)

4. Insert at least four different "basic effects" (text and pictures don't count) (Insert, Basic Effect, choose...)

5. Insert at least one "instant effect" (Insert, Instant Effect, choose)

6. Insert at least one Yahooligan OR Headline News. (Insert, choose)

Please use the link below to let me know when you have finished your Web page. Be sure to INCLUDE the URL of your Web page.

Activity 3: Blogging

ASSIGNMENT DIRECTIONS: A blog, also known as a Web log, refers to a Web site or page featuring chronological entries. These could also be considered an online journal or public diary. The key word is PUBLIC, although some blogging Web sites do have a privacy option. Blog writers (often called bloggers) may create their blogs for personal or professional use, covering everything and anything from their favorite musician to a recent vacation.

A blog can include words, photos, or both, as well as a title. Each post features the date and time it was published. Many blogs also provide a means for readers to post comments about each entry (great for friends and family) and usually include archived posts and lists of links to other Web sites of interest.

A study (January 2007) done by the Pew Internet & American Life Project shows that 19% of people aged 12-17 created a blog, while 38% of teens read blogs regularly.

Set Up: Go to the main page in Yahoo, Featured Services (left-hand column, bottom), GeoCities, Log in. On the right-hand side, half way down, is a link "Setting Up a Blog."
This link will show you how to set up a Yahoo 360° blog.

Grading Criteria (L14A3):

1. Create at least three posts...make them interesting!

2. Add at least three pictures

3. Add at least three hyperlinks

4. Include the link to the site

Use the link below to let me know when you have finished your project. Be sure to INCLUDE the URL of your blog.
